Abstract

This quasi-experimental research study was designed to investigate the effect of health education program toward the improvement of Prathom five students' health promotion behavior in the practice of personal hygiene. The samples were composed of 49 students Prathom five in Kumbong Primary School, which was experimental group and 54 students Prathom five in Chumchon Nongkungwittaya Primary School, which was control group. Those samples were randomly two-stage sampling and assigned to experiment and control groups. Health education program consists of personal hygiene education plan, slide-tape and game. Changing in the students' knowledge and attitude toward personal hygiene practice was measured by pre and post test after the health education program while their actual practice was measured one month after the program intervention through observation and checklist. Sample were collected during 16th May 1996 to 30 th June 1996. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation then test for significantly by t-test. The results are as the followings:
1. The students in experimental group showed significantly higher mean scores in knowledge, attitude and practice related to personal hygiene practice than the control group.
2. The students in experimental group showed significantly higher mean scores in knowledge, attitude and practice related to personal hygiene practice after receiving the health education program than before receiving the program.
3. The students in control group also showed significantly higher mean scores in knowledge, attitude and practice related to personal hygiene practice after receiving regular health education program by teacher than before the program. Health education program using multimedia method should be considered as an effective means to improve the students' health. School administrators should provide enough resources to support and facilitate their staff to use multimedia in their class not only for health education but other classes as well. More researches on improving health promotion behavior of the students in other issues should be done to improve their quality of life and well-being.
